Martinez’s shutout, Gimenez’s four homers earn them weekly awards

Sioux City Explorers catcher Wilfredo Gimenez and Winnipeg Goldeyes starter R.J. Martinez won the American Association’s Pointstreak batter and pitcher of the week award for the week ending 8/27, the league announced Monday.

Gimenez powered his way to this weekly honor, hitting a league-high four home runs during the week to go along with a .429 average (9-for-21), two doubles and two walks.

The backstop struck out just once during the week while also driving in nine runs, the third best mark in the league during the week.

This is Gimenez’s third season in the American Association after playing with both Gary and Fargo-Moorhead in 2019, nearly all of last season with Lake Country and now this year in Sioux City. The 32 year-old previously played in the Florida/Miami Marlins organization between 2008-2014.

On the pitching side, Martinez was lights out in both of his starts, pitching twice this past week and allowing just one earned run across 17 innings pitched.

Martinez’s highlight of the week and of his season was pitching a complete game shutout against the first place Kansas City Monarchs on Saturday night, allowing just four hits and striking out two.

The left-hander picked up a tough-luck loss in his previous start, going eight innings and allowing just one earned run against Sioux Falls.

Martinez is in his second season in Winnipeg in a mixed role of starting and relieving. He owns a 6-4 record on the season to go along with a 4.39 ERA across 71.2 innings pitched.

Pointstreak is the official statistician of the American Association.
